Shadow Captain grew out of Jett Cheek's desire to explore in full the music of David Crosby. After David Crosby's passing in Jan. 2023, Jett asked some close friends if they were interested in joining him on a project to bring David Crosby's music and story to life by working on a Broadway stage show built on Croz's music. And thus, Shadow Captain was born.
2023 was a year of exploring the vast musical output of David Crosby, and finding the songs which not only were representative of his life, but were playable by the band. What started as 4 friends quickly grew to 11 collaborators working on an initial set list. Backers appeared, and word spread about this group: Shadow Captain. We decided to test the waters in 2024 with gigs and an initial script.
Our first public gig was on Jan. 18, 2024 at Steve's Wine Bar in Denton, to a sold-out house. Incorporating feedback from the audience, we expanded our set list to include music by Crosby's collaborators (CSNY, the Byrds, Stephen Stills, etc). Our next public outing was May 4 at Dan's Silverleaf; again to a standing-room only crowd. On May 12 we performed as part of Theatre Denton's fundraiser event, and continued to add new charts through the year.
Shadow Captain now has 2 tracks: a live music tribute band which plays at venues in the DFW area, and continued development of the original idea for a theatrical stage play based on David Crosby's music & life. Work continues on the stage script.
